Depute
editA person appointed to act for another or perform another’s duties; a deputy or representative. Particularly in Scottish usage, depute occurs in official titles, such as sheriff depute and lieutenant depute. As a verb, to depute means to appoint or authorise someone to act on another’s behalf. The term remains current, especially in Scottish legal and official contexts.
