Deputy Lieutenant

A person appointed to assist a county’s Lord Lieutenant. In the nineteenth century, Deputy Lieutenants were usually prominent local landowners who helped administer the militia and volunteer forces and undertook ceremonial duties. Several could serve simultaneously under one Lord Lieutenant. The office continues today, principally supporting the lieutenancy’s ceremonial and community functions.
