East India Company College

The East India Company College, at Haileybury in Hertfordshire, was established in 1806 to train young men entering the Company’s civil service in India. Students studied languages, law, history, economics, and other subjects relevant to administration, and the College became an important route into the Company’s civil administration. After the Indian Civil Service was opened to competitive examination in 1853, the College’s role changed, and it closed in 1858.
