Ecclesiastical Commission

A body established by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners Act 1836 to reform the management of the property and finances of the Church of England, following investigations begun in 1835. Its creation reflected the reforming spirit of the 1832 Reform Act. The Commission included senior bishops, the Lord Chancellor, other government officials, and lay members. In 1948, its responsibilities for Church finances and property passed to the Church Commissioners for England.
