Elementary Education Acts
editA series of Acts of Parliament establishing and developing state-supported elementary education in England and Wales. The Elementary Education Act 1870 created elected School Boards and enabled new schools to be established where provision was inadequate. Further Acts, notably those of 1876 and 1880, extended responsibility for children’s education and made attendance compulsory. The system was reorganised by the Education Act 1902, which abolished School Boards.
