In law, a legal arrangement restricting the inheritance or disposal of landed property, so that an estate passed according to rules established by an earlier settlement rather than being freely sold or left by will. Particularly important in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century England, entails helped preserve estates within families but could leave landowners rich in property yet short of ready money. They were effectively abolished by the Law of Property Act 1925.
