Exchequer

edit

By John Simpson •

In Britain, the Exchequer referred both to the government department responsible for managing Crown revenue and expenditure and, historically, to the Court of Exchequer, one of the three principal common-law courts of England. The court originally dealt particularly with financial matters but acquired wider civil jurisdiction. The Treasury and Exchequer developed into distinct institutions, and the Court of Exchequer was absorbed into the High Court under the Judicature Acts 1873-5.
