Factory Act

edit

By John Simpson •

A British Act of Parliament regulating conditions in factories, particularly the employment of children and young people. The first Factory Act was passed in 1802, but the Factory Act 1833 was a major advance, limiting children’s working hours and establishing factory inspection. Further Factory Acts during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries progressively extended regulation of working hours, safety, and welfare.
