Fellow Commoner

edit

By John Simpson •

A university or college student, especially at Oxford or Cambridge, who held a fellowship or other privileged status and traditionally paid for the privilege of dining with the Fellows. Fellow commoners were generally from wealthier backgrounds and were not necessarily candidates for a degree. The status was chiefly associated with the older collegiate system and became uncommon during the twentieth century.
