First World War

The global conflict of 1914–18, also known as the Great War, which followed the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June 1914 and the ensuing diplomatic crisis and mobilisation. The United Kingdom declared war on Germany on 4 August. Fighting extended across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the seas, ending with the Armistice of 11 November 1918.
