Foundation Scholar

edit

By John Simpson •

A pupil or student supported by an educational institution’s original endowment or a fund established for that purpose. At schools such as Eton, foundation scholars traditionally received financial support and held places governed by the founder’s statutes, distinguishing them from fee-paying pupils. The term also occurs at universities and other endowed institutions, where its precise meaning and privileges vary.
