Fourth Party
editA small group of independent Conservative MPs active in the House of Commons from 1880, comprising Lord Randolph Churchill, Sir Henry Drummond Wolff, John Gorst, and Arthur Balfour. Critical of both Gladstone’s Liberal government and their own Conservative leaders, they used aggressive parliamentary tactics to promote a more popular Conservatism. The group helped establish Churchill’s reputation and influenced the development of Tory Democracy.
