free trade
editA policy of international commerce favouring the removal or reduction of tariffs and other restrictions on imports and exports. In nineteenth-century Britain it became a major political doctrine, associated particularly with Richard Cobden, John Bright, and the Anti-Corn Law League. Repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 was its landmark victory, after which Britain increasingly pursued unilateral free trade.
