Geological Survey
editThe systematic investigation and mapping of the geology, minerals, and geological resources of a country or region, and the government organisation undertaking such work. National surveys were established in the nineteenth century, including the Geological Survey of Great Britain and Ireland (1835; given statutory form in 1845), the Geological Survey of Ireland (1845), and the Geological Survey of India (1851). These surveys remain important sources of geological maps and information.
