Grand Trunk Road

edit

By John Simpson •

A major historic route across northern India, running from Calcutta (Kolkata) through Benares (Varanasi), Allahabad (Prayagraj), Delhi, and Lahore to Peshawar and on towards Afghanistan. With ancient origins, it was substantially rebuilt under Sher Shah Suri in the sixteenth century and extensively improved by the British in the nineteenth, becoming a major artery for administration, trade, postal communications, and military movement.
