Great Famine

edit

By John Simpson •

A catastrophic famine in Ireland from 1845 to 1852, caused by repeated potato blight and aggravated by poverty, dependence on the potato, and inadequate government relief. About one million people died and more than a million emigrated, profoundly affecting Ireland’s population, society, and politics. The term Great Famine may also refer to the severe famine in India in 1876–78.
