By John Simpson •

The nineteenth-century strategic rivalry between Britain and Russia for influence in Central Asia, particularly Afghanistan and Persia. Britain sought to protect India against perceived Russian expansion, while Russia extended its influence southwards. The rivalry involved diplomacy, espionage, exploration, and occasional military intervention. It was substantially eased by the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907, which established respective spheres of influence.
