gunboat diplomacy

By John Simpson •

The use or threat of naval force to support diplomatic demands, particularly by a powerful state seeking concessions from a weaker one. The term became associated with nineteenth-century European imperialism, when naval vessels could be used to compel governments to accept treaties, open ports, pay debts, or protect foreign interests. It was employed particularly by Britain, France, and other imperial powers, and remained a feature of international relations into the twentieth century.
