High Court

edit

By John Simpson •

The principal court of first instance in England and Wales for serious civil and criminal cases, and an important appellate court. It was created by the Judicature Acts 1873–75, which amalgamated the former superior courts, including the Courts of King’s Bench, Common Pleas, Exchequer, and Chancery. The High Court is divided into the King’s Bench, Chancery, and Family Divisions. It remains part of the Senior Courts of England and Wales.
