editIrish self-government within the United Kingdom, through an Irish parliament controlling domestic affairs. The movement for Home Rule was led by Isaac Butt and Charles Stewart Parnell, and became a major issue from the 1870s. Gladstone’s Home Rule Bills of 1886 and 1893 failed, and the Government of Ireland Act 1914 was suspended during the First World War. In most of Ireland, Home Rule was overtaken by independence in 1922.
