Incorporated Law Society

The professional body for solicitors in England and Wales, founded in 1825 as the Law Institution. It received a Royal Charter in 1831 and a further Charter in 1845, under which its constitutional position was established. The Society represented and increasingly regulated the solicitors’ profession, with important roles in legal education, examinations, professional conduct, and law reform. Its Hall in Chancery Lane opened in 1832. The name Law Society became official in 1903 and remains in use today.
