Inns of Court

The four London societies responsible for the education, admission, and professional organisation of barristers in England and Wales: Lincoln’s Inn, Gray’s Inn, Inner Temple, and Middle Temple. Originating in the medieval period, they remained important in the nineteenth century as centres of legal education and professional life. Membership was also part of the social and cultural education of many gentlemen who never became practising lawyers.
