Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire, a British order of chivalry founded by Queen Victoria in 1878. The rank was created in 1888, when the Order was expanded to three classes, ranking below GCIE and above CIE. Awarded to Indian rulers and British and Indian officials, it conferred knighthood and the post-nominal letters KCIE. Appointments ceased in 1947.
