Keeper of the Field

At Eton College, the traditional title for the captain of the College cricket XI. The Keeper of the Field was therefore the senior school cricketer responsible for leading the team, and the title was a recognised distinction in nineteenth-century Eton. It was sometimes used in biographies in place of “captain of cricket”. For example, Percy de Paravicini was Keeper of the Field in 1880 and 1881, when he captained the Eton XI.
