Keeper of the Rolls

edit

By John Simpson •

The official responsible for custody of the records of the Court of Chancery and, later, the wider records of the Crown. The office was traditionally held by the Master of the Rolls, whose title reflects this responsibility. As the Master of the Rolls became principally a senior judicial office, responsibility for the physical custody and administration of public records passed to other officials and institutions. The title is therefore chiefly historical.
