Land-Leaguers

edit

By John Simpson •

Members or supporters of the Irish National Land League, founded in 1879 to campaign for tenant farmers’ rights and reform of Ireland’s landlord-dominated land system. Land-Leaguers organised meetings, rent resistance, boycotts, and other agitation, seeking fair rents, security of tenure, and ultimately tenant ownership. The movement was closely associated with Charles Stewart Parnell and the wider Irish nationalist cause. The Land League was suppressed in 1881, though its aims continued through successor organisations.
