Land Question

edit

By John Simpson •

In nineteenth-century Ireland, the Land Question referred to disputes over the ownership, tenure, rents, and use of agricultural land, and particularly to the insecurity and grievances experienced by tenant farmers. Agitation for reform led to the Land League, the Land Acts of 1870 and 1881, and measures progressively strengthening tenants’ rights and opportunities for ownership. The issue was closely connected with Irish nationalism and Home Rule and remained politically important into the twentieth century.
