Linnean Society

A learned society founded in 1788 for the study of natural history, evolution, and taxonomy. Named after the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus, it became one of Britain’s leading scientific societies. During the nineteenth century it was closely associated with advances in natural history, including the first public presentation of Darwin and Wallace’s theory of evolution by natural selection in 1858. Fellows use the initials FLS.
