London School Board

edit

By John Simpson •

An elected local authority established under the Elementary Education Act 1870 to provide elementary schooling in London. The first directly elected body covering the whole metropolis, it built and managed schools, appointed teachers, and helped make education compulsory. Its prominent members included Thomas Huxley and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. It was abolished in 1904, when its responsibilities passed to the London County Council.
