Lord Lieutenant

The Sovereign’s representative in a county or lieutenancy area, historically responsible for local military defence and, particularly in the nineteenth century, the militia and volunteer forces. Usually a prominent landowner, the Lord Lieutenant appointed Deputy Lieutenants and formerly recommended Justices of the Peace. Unlike the annually appointed High Sheriff, the office was normally held for many years. It continues today, chiefly in ceremonial and community roles.
