Moderations

By John Simpson •

At Oxford, an intermediate university examination taken during the early part of an undergraduate course, before the final examinations for a degree. The system was introduced in 1850, initially as an examination between Responsions and the final BA examination. In Classics, Honour Moderations remain part of the undergraduate course; in other subjects, Moderations have largely been replaced by Preliminary Examinations or equivalent first examinations.
