Newcastle Select

An Eton College scholar distinguished in the competition for the Newcastle Scholarship, an annual examination in classical learning established in 1829. The Newcastle Select comprised candidates judged to have performed particularly well, from whom the Newcastle Scholar was chosen. The distinction recognised academic achievement but did not itself confer the scholarship.
