Nobleman’s degree

At Oxford University, a degree obtained under privileges formerly accorded to noblemen, allowing them advantages over ordinary undergraduates, including shortened residence and, at certain periods, exemption from ordinary examinations. These privileges reflected the special status traditionally accorded to peers and their sons. The arrangement was abolished during nineteenth-century university reforms. It should not be confused with an honorary degree.
