Oddfellows
editMembers of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a mutual-aid and friendly-society movement that expanded rapidly in Britain during the nineteenth century. Members paid regular contributions to local lodges, from which they could receive financial assistance during sickness, unemployment, or other hardship; families could receive support after a member’s death. Lodges also provided companionship and organised charitable activities. Oddfellows were particularly important before comprehensive state welfare provision.
