Oppidan

At Eton College, a boy who is not a King’s Scholar (Colleger) and therefore does not live in College. The term derives from the Latin oppidum, “town”, reflecting the fact that Oppidans originally lived in the town of Eton rather than in the College buildings. The distinction dates from the early history of the school and remains fundamental to Eton’s organisation. Oppidans traditionally include the majority of Eton’s pupils and participate in the Oppidan Wall team in the Wall Game.
