Oppidan

At Eton College, a pupil who is not a King’s Scholar (Colleger) and boards in one of the school’s houses rather than College. From Latin oppidum, ‘town’, reflecting the original accommodation of such pupils in Eton. Oppidans constitute most of the school’s pupils. The distinction remains current, notably in the annual Wall Game match on St Andrew’s Day between Oppidan Wall and College Wall.
