Order of St Michael and St George

edit

By John Simpson •

A British order of chivalry founded in 1818 to recognise service in the Ionian Islands and Malta. Its scope later expanded to the British Empire and overseas service. Today it principally honours distinguished contributions to diplomacy and international affairs. It has three ranks: Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GCMG), Knight or Dame Commander (KCMG or DCMG), and Companion (CMG).
