Peelite

edit

By John Simpson •

As a noun: a supporter of Sir Robert Peel, particularly a Conservative who followed Peel in supporting free trade and the repeal of the Corn Laws. After the Conservatives split over repeal in 1846, Peelites formed a distinct political group, which later helped create the Liberal Party through its alliance with Whigs and Radicals. As an adjective: relating to Peel, his political principles, or his followers; especially associated with moderate conservatism and free trade.
