Peninsular War

The war fought in Spain and Portugal from 1807 to 1814 against the French occupation during the Napoleonic Wars. French forces initially invaded Portugal and subsequently occupied much of Spain, provoking widespread Spanish resistance. Britain, allied with Portugal and the Spanish insurgents, sent an army commanded principally by Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington). The campaign included the battles of Vimeiro, Talavera, Salamanca, and Vitoria, and ended with the expulsion of French forces from the Iberian Peninsula. It was a major training ground for the British Army.
