Perpetual Curate
editAn Anglican clergyman appointed to serve a church permanently, without the full legal status of a rector or vicar. Particularly important in nineteenth-century England, perpetual curates provided pastoral care in newly established parishes and churches lacking separate endowments. Their position increasingly resembled that of vicars, and the title was abolished by legislation in 1968, effective from 1969.
