Petty Sessions

edit

By John Simpson •

Local courts consisting of one or more Justices of the Peace, usually dealing with less serious criminal offences and certain licensing and administrative matters. Unlike Quarter Sessions, they had no fixed quarterly schedule and generally dealt with cases summarily, without a jury. They continued throughout the twentieth century and remain the basis of the magistrates’ courts of England and Wales, although the terminology of “Petty Sessions” is now largely historical.
