Poor Law Amendment Act

edit

By John Simpson •

Usually referring to the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, which reorganised the system of poor relief in England and Wales. It established Poor Law Unions, each generally centred on a workhouse, and sought to discourage reliance on outdoor relief. Administration passed from individual parishes to locally elected Boards of Guardians. The Act shaped poor relief until the system was substantially replaced by twentieth-century social welfare legislation.
