Poor Law
editThe system of public relief for people unable to support themselves, administered in England and Wales by parishes and, after the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, chiefly by elected Poor Law Unions and workhouses. The system originated in the Elizabethan Poor Laws and continued, in modified form, until the establishment of the modern welfare state in the twentieth century.
