Poor Laws

By John Simpson •

The laws governing public relief for people unable to support themselves, principally administered by English and Welsh parishes. The system developed from the Elizabethan Poor Law legislation of 1597-1601 and was reorganised by the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, which established Poor Law Unions and workhouses. The Poor Laws continued, with successive reforms, until replaced by the modern welfare system in the twentieth century.
