A Royal Navy officer formally promoted, or ‘posted’, to the substantive rank of captain, acquiring permanent seniority and eligibility for promotion to admiral. Officers of lower rank commanding vessels could also be addressed as ‘Captain’ and described as such in newspapers and records, but this courtesy title did not confer a post captain’s rank or seniority.
