Presidency

By John Simpson •

The term of office or position of a president. In British India, a Presidency was a principal territorial administration of the East India Company, notably Bengal, Madras, and Bombay, each headed by a Governor. Penang became a fourth Presidency in 1805, though this status ended in 1830. The Presidencies continued under the Crown after 1858, with their boundaries and administrative status changing as provincial government developed.
