primogeniture
editThe principle by which the eldest son traditionally inherited the whole or principal part of a parent’s estate, or succeeded to a hereditary title, in preference to younger sons and daughters. In England it was particularly important in the descent of landed estates, helping to prevent their fragmentation. The system of inheritance of land was abolished by the Administration of Estates Act 1925; some hereditary titles continue to follow male-preference succession.
