Primrose League
editA political organisation founded in 1883 to promote the principles and electoral interests of the Conservative Party. Named after Benjamin Disraeli’s favourite flower, the League used social events, meetings, lectures, and canvassing to mobilise supporters, including large numbers of women, who could not yet vote in parliamentary elections. It became an important instrument of Conservative popular politics in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but declined after the Second World War.
