By John Simpson •

In British India, a territory ruled by an Indian prince or other hereditary ruler who acknowledged British paramountcy but retained varying degrees of internal autonomy. Princely states were not part of British India’s directly administered provinces, and their rulers conducted external relations through the British government. At independence in 1947, there were more than five hundred such states; most acceded to India or Pakistan and were subsequently integrated into those countries.
