Historically, a lawyer authorised to practise in ecclesiastical and Admiralty courts, where civil law applied. Proctors were associated with Doctors’ Commons, but their separate profession was absorbed into that of solicitors by the Judicature Acts of 1873 and 1875. In universities, a proctor is an official responsible for administration, discipline, and student affairs. In nineteenth-century universities, proctors exercised significant authority over students and university regulations.
