pupillage

The period of supervised professional training undertaken by someone preparing to practise as a barrister. Today, it normally lasts twelve months and is undertaken in a barrister’s chambers after being called to the bar. In the nineteenth century, before modern academic requirements were established, pupillage commonly lasted three to five years and provided practical training in areas such as pleading, equity, conveyancing, and general advocacy.
